- Each pair of in and out times is one stretch of work; the hours are added up per day.
- Federal rules: hours past 40 in the week are overtime, paid at 1.5 times the rate.
- California: past 8 hours in a day is overtime, past 12 is double time, and weekly hours past 40 are overtime too.
- California: a shift longer than 5 hours needs a 30-minute meal break that starts before the end of the 5th hour; otherwise one extra hour of pay is owed.
- Rounding to the nearest 15 minutes is the “7-minute rule”: 8:07 counts as 8:00, 8:08 as 8:15.
- Decimal hours are what payroll systems ask for: 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25.
